Turkey

2023

Highlights:

Summary

The bridge between worlds, Türkiye. Meeting and mixing Europe, the Middle East and the Caucuses.

Honestly I didn't spend enough time in Turkey and what I did do and see was a bit 'touristy'. Istanbul is one of those cities you could spend weeks alone, from it's 'Europe side' and it's 'Asia Side' you can experience a great mesh of foods, lifestyles and fun experiences.

Exercise a high degree of caution

Challenges

Taxi drivers in Turkey are something else. Never trust the driver, if you know they're going the wrong way don't be afraid to jump out and if they decide to double the agreed-upon price after you've arrived, expect the confrontation to become physical.

Do

Find accommodation on the 'Asia' side of Istanbul, the district of Kadikoy. You can still see all the famous things of the 'Europe' side but save so much on money and the nightlife is best on the Asia anyway.

Negotiate locally for the hot air balloons in Cappadocia. You can secure a half price discount the night before if theirs been a string of good weather days
