Timor-Leste

2024

Highlights:

Summary

One of the world's youngest countries, least traveled and with a truly tragic recent history. Riding through the street you attract a lot of eyeballs followed with a constant stream of 'hello''s, 'hi's and 'where are you from?'.

The infrastructure here is extremely basic with most roads made of only dirt/mud and the 4th slowest cellular network globally.

What it lacks in amenities it makes up for in ecology, by being relatively untouched it has the worlds most bio-diverse coral reefs surrounding the ex-prison island of Atauro.

Official Travel Advice

From the Australian DFAT Smartraveller

Exercise a high degree of caution

Challenges

There is almost no tourism infrastructure except for dive centers.

The roads are almost nonexistent with potholes regularly swallowing up whole motorbikes. It's fun but ensure ample time and energy

Do

Spend a few days at 'Barry's Place' in Atauro. He's amazing and theirs a lot to do surprisingly
